After a few year hiatus, the Keystone UAS made their return to Goodhope Speedway, revisiting a track was a schedule staple. With warmer temperatures and plenty of sun, the drivers had to be on their “A” game to tame this track. Nine muscle karts joined in on the race.
Heat 1 winner: 707 Paul Deasey Jr Heat 2 winner: 77F Denny Furlow Feature time came and only seven of the nine who started the night were heading out for the 20 lap finale. Denny Furlow checked out on the field early and looked very strong out there. However, the caution flag flew while the 69 of Brian Hartzell was slowing on the track and heading off. After a caution lap or so, race leader Furlow pulled to the inside just in front of the flagstand. Paul Deasey Jr assumed the lead for the restart and never looked back. Feature Results:
All in all, it was a fun and challenging return to Goodhope Speedway. I would like to thank the staff for opening their doors to the muscle karts and working with us to put on a great show. Next up is a trip to Blairsville Speedway and the John Smith Memorial Race on August 12th. This will be Keystone’s 2nd National ¼ point race of the season.

Race number 3 of the KUAS season was a trip to the triangle at Penns Creek. This was a joint effort with the Empire UAS and one of their national 1/4 pt races. This was also a part of the UAS camping weekend with a Friday night race at Selinsgrove. Race washed out the Selinsgrove event (it was a non points race). Due to prior commitments and work obligations, I was not able to make the event. The only run down was a finishing order that Jimmy White had put together.
1. Jimmy White 2. John Garde 3. Eric Grice 4. Jeff Drugan 5. Brett Mesler 6. Bobby Baldwin 7. Austin Suain 8. Ben Taft 9. Steve Windle 10. Raymond Vossler 11. Dan Burket 12. Brian Hartzell 13. Tom Voeltz 14. Mark Bergfelt 15. Zac Lamb 16. Kyle Pease 17. Cody Zimmerman . Next up for the KUAS is a revisit to a track that was a regular staple to the series, Goodhope Speedway in New Springfield, Ohio on July 29th. Hope to see everyone there and have fun no matter where you race! Steve T This week, the Keystone UAS traveled down to Pavia (or Claysburg for the GPS) to tackle the red clay bullring- Red Rock Raceways. After a couple days prior of heavy rains in the area, the sun came out to welcome 9 muscle karts to the south eastern PA mountains. Red Rock typically runs 1 heat and a feature, so they worked out a way for the KUAS to get both heats and feature in.
Action was fast through both heats with minimal cautions. Here are the heat results: Heat 1 Heat 2
The feature was a very fast paced, CAUTION FREE race that saw Brandon Oldham get out front and pull away from the field. It was by no means a walk off for Oldham, Kyle Pease was within striking distance most of the race. A great back and forth battle lasted for laps between Dan Burket and Denny Furlow, with Burket able to hold on to the 3rd spot. No cautions gave the fans a great fast paced show, lots of action, and made it a blast to call! Congratulations to Brandon Oldham scoring the KUAS national ¼ point race #1 win of 2017. Here are the feature results:
Thank you to all that made their way down and put on a great show! Thanks also to Chuck, Troy, and all the staff at Red Rock Raceways that always make us feel right at home when we go. Not to mention the opportunity to chat on the horn all night. I had a great time! Next up is part of the camping weekend with the Empire UAS at Penns Creek on Saturday July 8th. There is a non points race at Selinsgrove Raceway Park Friday night if you want to make it a weekend of racing and fun! Steve T Congratulations to Dan Burket who won the Keystone UAS point race at Naugle Speedway on Saturday June 10. This was the opening race for the KUAS. The first two races on their schedule were rained out. Paul Deasey gave Dan a run for the money finishing close in second. That pair was clearly dominant. Dennis Furlow was third, Harry McElhaney was fourth, Brian Hartzell was fifth, Larry Reigleman 6th, Mike Clark 7th. The only DNF was Mark Bergfelt who was running strong early on but the power of his Vindicator engine ripped the teeth off of his axle sprocket.
Posted on KUAS Facebook by Mark Bergfelt Once again the indecisive weather has put the stops to another KUAS race event. Even though this was a non points event at Race-1, it still would have been a lot of fun to get together and race. We will try again to get the first race of the season in on June 10th with a trip to Naugle Speedway. Hope to see everyone there and maybe the rains will subside for a Saturday.
Steve T Unfortunately, with the forecast calling for cool, wet conditions rolling in tonight and into tomorrow, we are going to cancel the May 13th race at Flatrun Speedway. Weather and travel times and distances played a role in the decision.
The next race on the schedule is on Sunday, May 28th at Race-1 Motorspeedway in Dubois, PA. This is a non points race. More details will be forthcoming. Sorry for any inconvenience. Steve T The 2017 Season schedule is set and looks like another great year for the Keystone region. We will be running with some of the other Northeast Regions to bring the muscle kart thunder to a track near you.
May 13 Flatrun Speedway w/Empire{¼ pt} & Upstate NY - Morrisdale, PA May 28 (SUNDAY) Race-1 Motorspeedway Big-1 *no points* Dubois, PA June 10 Naugle Speedway - Aliquippa, PA June 24 Red Rock Raceways - ¼ pt #1 - Pavia, PA July 8th Penns Creek w/ Empire{¼ pt} - Penns Creek, PA July 29 Goodhope Speedway - New Springfield, OH August 12th John Smith Memorial ¼ pt#2 - Blairsville Speedway w/ Empire -Blairsville, PA September 2nd- Pittsfield Championship Karting Assoc - Pittsfield, PA *September 22-23 UAS Grand National - Arizona Karting Assn- Glendale, AZ Maximum 5 of the 7 points races will count towards year end point total- meaning drivers have 2 races they can drop. There are no rainout makeup races. If a National ¼ pt race is rained out, KUAS member drivers will have input on the reschedule of that event. You do not need to be a member of the UAS to compete (it is encouraged), however, you will need to send in membership to receive points toward the National and Northeast Divisional Championships. Also, you will be held to the rules of this Region and National rules. If you have any questions, concerns, sponsorship interest, or really anything please feel free to contact me. I will get back to you as soon as I can. We are also looking for sponsorship to add to the purse at the Big-1, so if you are interested please let me know. See everyone soon! Steve T I am still working on the 2017 schedule and it usually takes into the New Year before it gets finalized. The tentative opening day is May 13, 2017 at Flatrun Speedway. I have a few dates scheduled with another region, but more to come. This year, it has been suggested to go back to a full points season (no Wildcard races) and doing drops. Looking at a 7-8 race schedule with 2 drops- no rainout reschedule races. Please let me know any questions or concerns. I will be posting this in other forums so that I can reach as many people as possible.
Steve T An impromptu race at Blairsville Speedway was in order for those who were looking to test without points pressure, get one last one in the year, or just to get out on the Indiana PA area red clay. For whatever the reason, the UAS were welcomed to be a part of Oktoberfest. Engine issues and prior obligations limited the field, but there was great racing and a great way to make an impression with the muscle karts. Temperatures by feature had cooled to the mid 40's and the only time we saw the sun was when it was heading down over the hills.
The track was wet after recent rain and unlike the last time, was not able to seal off and stayed soft and tacky all night. Dan Burket tested with his Cr250, which saw the checkers first in both heats. When the feature came around, it was Mark Bergfelt and his Vindicator holding off a very hard charging Burket for the win. Harry McElhaney crossed in third with his 125 Sudam. All though the class was thin, the night was still a lot of fun. A lot of questions were asked about the series, setups, and the exposure to many folks who have never seen these before. I have to thank Pete for letting us come out and even adding to the purse (which was evenly given back to the drivers) even though only three were there. I cannot thank them for their support of muscle kart racing and kart racing in general throughout the years, Next item for the KUAS is working on a 2017 schedule. I have heard of a closing of a track in the region and the expansion of a track that could be a part of the season. Feel free to message me on Facebook, [email protected] or the contact sheet on here, @kuas89 on Twitter. Thank you again to all the tracks, sponsors, drivers, friends, and fans for the support in 2016! Steve T The Keystone UAS joined up with the Empire and Upstate NY regions for the 4th annual Northeast Divisional. The NE Divisional race is one to crown a champion of the collective regions using points accrued from the 1/4 points races and this particular race to make a champion. Next season will see the addition of the Central NY UAS joining into the title hunt.
This year's event took place as a part of the Kevin Ward Memorial race at Allagany Memorial Speedway. AMS is a just over 1/10 mile bullring located in Wellsville, NY. The gates opened early for the show that included several races for Youth and Clone drivers. Also highlighted was the newly formed Junior UAS division. Just as the show was about to get underway, the rains came. This put us in rain delay for about 2 hours. Despite the pouring water, the track was ready within an hour and racing got underway. Twenty-four opens took to the track for the qualifying with local hot shoe Jimmy White setting fast time with an 8.573. Ben Taft was a close second with 8.692, Robbie Sarchet at 8.696 in :hirdRon O'Neil at 8.739 in fourth and Denny Furlow recording a 8.797 in fifth, Eleven drivers came in under 9 seconds! Qualifying set the lineup for the heats. Top two in heats raced in the Dash for Cash Top two in heats were: Heat 1 - Jimmy White & Denny Furlow Heat 2- Ben Taft & Kirk Cox Heat 3- Robbie Sarchet & Raymond Vossler Heat 4- Austin Suain & Ron O'Neil The Dash for cash was a great battle between the eight on the track with Robbie Sarchet crossing the line the winner with Jimmy White in second and Austin Suain rounding out the top 3. That set the lineup for the top eight feature spots. With four others automatically making it on time, it came down to the "B" Main to put the final four competitors in for the "A" Main. The "B" was a hard fought race that saw quite a few caution laps. When the dust settled, John Garde held on for the win with Kyle Pease, Steve Cox, and Brian Hartzell transferring into the "A". That leads us into the feature which was one of the best races I have seen in a while. Robbie Sarchet and JImmy White raced each other quite well, showing that they were some of the fastest muscle karts to take on the bullring. A few cautions and close calls, including White bringing out the caution. He was able to race back to a battle with Kirk Cox for second, but Sarchet had checked out on the field, winning the race and collecting the $1000 check. In the feature, Sarchet had set the fast time for the night with a lap of 8.383! Thank you to Jimmy White who worked with Layfields to be a part of the show, the NYDKS for timing and scoring, all the drivers, fans, and sponsors who make these events possible. Ron O'Neil's 4th place finish secured him the title of Northeast Divisional Champion. Jimmy White finished 2nd only 8 points back- John Garde was 3rd, Kyle Pease 4th, and Jeff Drugan was 5th. For more details, be sure to pick up the Fall edition of American Muscle Kart Magazine! Next up is a trip to Blairsville for their Oktoberfest and some racing for bragging rights! Steve T |
