The 5th John Smith Memorial race saw 22 muscle karts from the Unlimited All-Stars and Rebel series take to Blairsville Speedway July 26th in honor of a fallen racer. UAS regions were represented from Upstate NY, Empire, Keystone, and Virginia, not to mention the turnout from the Rebel Racing Series to help make a large field of some of the best muscle kart pilots in the Northeast! With so many participants, Heats were broken down into 3 segments and a B main was used to fill the final race order. Let's get a look at the results from the night. The new clay recently installed at Stonybrook made an excellent surface for a perfect night for racing on July 5. In the first heat race it looked like Steve Windle Jr was going to add another win to his season but Brandon Oldham got faster during the final laps and put himself in position to pass on the back sweeper and then motored on to the win. In the second heat it looked like it was going to be all Oldham, but with just a couple of laps to go he blew his motor coming off of turn four handing the win to Randy Adair. In the feature the front row was Windle and Adair. Adair got a better start and lead from that point on. It was not a ride in the park though. Windle was very close the entire time and on many occasions during the 20 lap race it looked as though he would make the winning pass, but each time Adair held on. In the final portion Windle got braver and higher on the track looking for a door but that just opened another door for Paul Deasy who got faster and faster as the race wore on. Deasey got inside of Windle on the back side of the track and it became a three way battle for the lead. On the final lap Adair got off of turn four for the win, Deasy was on the inside coming off of turn four but Windle carried a lot of speed on the outside to put his nose across the strip by about four inches putting him second for the evening. Deasy got third place money. Oldham got 4th place points for the evening and Mark Bergfelt, who broke early on, got 5th place points. |
