The Keystone UAS wrapped up the 2015 season with a trip to Cove Valley Speedway last night. Joining the KUAS was the Empire UAS, who were running their final national ¼ point race of the season. Plenty of sunshine and temps hanging in the low 80’s made for a picture perfect day and night in the cornfields of Martinsburg, PA. Twelve muscle karts rolled out to try to get those final season points, whether to improve in the national standings or to claim the KUAS title. Going into the night, first through third (Denny Furlow,Dan Burket, Brandon Oldham) in the Keystone standings were separated by 10 points, which had me thinking of what to do if there was a 3 way tie for the championship. Hmm, let’s see how things shook out. Heats were split into 2 segments of 6 muscle karts. A handful of drivers had never made their way to Cove Valley, so hot laps and the first heat seemed to have the drivers racing not only the competitors, but trying to get a handle on the track. Clean racing throughout the heats, with heat 1 winners being Paul Deasey Jr and Jeff Drugan. Heat 2 winners Steve Windle Jr and Eric “Beef” Grice. Let’s get a look at the results from the heats. Championship contender for the KUAS title Dan Burket was having trouble with his engine running full song and not idling could not make it out for the feature. Leaving 11 muscle karts to run for max points and still 2 in the hunt for the KUAS title. Just before the green flew, Grice pulled off the track. Only one of the twin motors had fired causing an early exit to the feature. Only 2 cautions during the feature, first after contact between Bobby Baldwin and Paul Deasey Jr, causing Deasey to turn it around in 2 and Andy Pritt slowing on the track. John Garde had made it was to the front of the pack and was the man to beat rolling to another win on the season. Despite Brandon Oldham finishing ahead of Denny Furlow, it wasn’t enough to claim the title. Denny Furlow claimed the 2015 Keystone Unlimited All-Stars Championship. Harry McElhaney was the recipient of the Hendrick Motorsports sponsored item. This was an incredible first year for me as administrator for the Keystone Region. I have to give all the men and women who piloted those muscle karts at the events this year. Everyone of you deserve a mountain of credit for your skills and professionalism at the track!! Without you, none of this is possible!! You have the hard job, I just do the paperwork. There are some things that I learned and hope to adjust for next season, but will be looking for input and consideration of the drivers. Please note due to scheduling conflicts, the Red Rock “Wild Card” Race on the original schedule has been cancelled.
